NatWest U19 T20 Final v Oldfield Parkonians CC U19 v Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Under 19 on Sun 10 Sep 2017 at 14.30
Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Winning the toss, Wanstead elected to bowl with the weather looking a little unpredictable later in the afternoon. Following the loss of an early wicket to Jayden in the third over, OP prospered with Dhruv and Paran reaching 45 by the end of the power play. The partnership was broken with a c&b by Feroze in the 7th but when Aman (32 from 23) departed and Paran (50 from 43) retired on 134, a solid base had been set from which they were able to reach 153 for 4 at the close, leading to much vocal celebration by their supporters.
The pinch hitter strategy did not pay off on this occasion, Jayden falling for 2 in the second over. However, for the first time this year, his demise brought Feroze and Robin together and it was a occasion well worth the wait. Exactly 11 overs and 98 runs later, Robin was retired on 50 from 41, having outscored his more experience partner. After a further 3 overs, Feroze followed, undefeated on 54 from 37 with the total on 128. Needing 26 runs from 28 balls, the next 4 batters hit precisely 1 boundary between them, with the partnership between Nabeel and Aryan exemplifying the intelligent and methodical approach required, rotating the strike beautifully (23 from 19 with only one dot ball). The target of 154 was run down with 3 balls to spare, clinching a win with what I feel is the best team batting performance this age group have ever produced.
OP arrived unbeaten at the finals, keen to avenge their defeat last year. They were, on balance, probably the favourites on the day but suffered the misfortune of losing a key player with a dislocated finger in the semi-final. Their second misfortune was to meet Feroze and Robin in wonderful form, batting together for the first and likely only time in this age group. That they were supported by such depth of determined batting demonstrated again why Wanstead can always pose a threat as despite the challenging total, the players, led very ably by Nabeel, never lost heart or self-belief.
Lastly, in winning this ECB tournament, we have been asked to represent Essex in the SE Regional play off. This is an unofficial competition that we won last year and after canvassing the players, I have accepted the invitation. Unlike last year, we will have a large number of the current side unavailable, not least because several may be required by Joe for the 1st XI in the main event of next weekend, the National Club Final. We will therefore be fielding a side composed of players I expect to play a major role in next year's U19 squad and, as always, the challenge they will face is to match the standards of the players who have gone before them.
My very heartfelt thanks to the players for their efforts, to Nabeel for proving to be a determined, inventive and capable captain, to the support from senior Club members, especially Suminda who gave up his Sunday to help and lastly, to the parents who continue to provide transport and for whom my choices and decisions continue to provide food for discussion..;p Thanks again all.
