Match report Wicked Wanstead Women Win With Will-power!

It is a crisp Sunday afternoon when I finally watched the Wanstead Women play cricket in the sun after 3 inconsistent weather affected weeks! Arriving at Overton Drive, the excitement in the ladies faces was evident. Normally restricted to playing at Nutter Lane, the name an apt description of the teams’ personalities I’m told, however, today, with the sun shining there was a buzz around the Wanstead ladies.

Jubilantly the girls all greeted me with a warm welcome and it wasn’t long until this buzz transpired its way on to the cricket pitch. Having lost the toss, with the Hampstead Ladies electing to bat first, Saba Nasim’s team quickly took the initiative to use this opportunity to their full advantage. By the fifth over Hampstead had already lost their opening batsman, Sian Culley for 14 runs with a fantastic run out by youngster Bethany Chambers off the bowling of Nafeesa. Her excellent agility in the field was to be repeated six overs later with another superb run out, leaving the score at 40-2.

Wickets tumbled terribly for the visiting team, at drinks Hampstead Ladies stood at 44-4 and then 56-6 before the entire team were all bowled out for 76 runs after 26.3 overs. Not the start Hampstead Ladies had hoped for after electing to bat first with Ellie Mitchell top scoring with 17 runs. Saba, leading a group of aggressive athletes whose interest in sport extends to numerous sports including football, tennis and badminton and not just cricket, showed their hunger to win. Watching Zainab clean bowl the middle order and Saba Nasim helping to clean up the end with Bethany adding the wicket of Jess Black to her run outs it was a refreshing sight to see after weeks of weather blighted cancellations and defeats.

Every over Saba bowled, her tactical ability as a cricketer, captain, and her shrewdness in the field impacted upon the opposition. By drawing her fielders inwards, ‘to put pressure on the batsmen,’ ultimately intimidated their batsmen into throwing their wickets away. Harriet Millard skiing a shot straight to cover to be neatly caught by Victoria Barrett. Jade Ellis followed in a similar fashion to Zainab Khan to leave the score at 70-7 after only 22 overs off the bowling of Anna Hrusa. No boundaries were leaked and Hampsteads’ innings was brought to an end by the captain herself, with Emma Edwards out

With a target of 77 to win, the Wanstead Ladies eagerly made their way out. Cheering the opening batsmen, Neha Mahatma, who currently plays for the Essex Under 17s side, and Bethany Chambers; Essex Under 15s, their eagerness to maintain control was as clear as day. With a good start and positive running between the wickets collecting two easy runs per ball, it wasn’t long before the boundaries came, with Bethany, first cutting towards cover off the bowling of Jade Ellis. Both Bethany and Neha did show some frustrations at one point, after being unable to connect with the ball, but it did not last long. Carefully watching the ball, both openers refused to risk their wicket, defensively blocking danger balls and putting away short ones. A mis-field opportunity taken after the Hampstead fielders hit the stumps was utilised by the girls as they eased their way onto the total. Boundaries boldly bashed by Neha towards mid-wicket swiftly brought up her score to 33 in under ten overs.

All in all it took a total of 14.3 overs for the winning runs to be recorded. Neha smashing a total of 9 boundaries for her 56* runs and Bethany 2 boundaries for her 14* runs. An easy and much deserved win by the Wanstead Women.
