Match report Fives promised to provide the first real challenge this years U15 have had to face and...they did not disappoint. Winning the toss, Fives set out to restrict the scoring rate from the first over with 4 boundary fielders. Wanstead reached a sub par total of 110 for 6 on a greenish wicket, leaving themselves a lot to do in the field. Mo Shariyar's 31 off 37 was the sole real highlight of the Wanstead innings.

Fives set off to steady start with the strategy of their defensive field placing became clear. Lacking real aggressive power, chasing a low total allowed their technically talented higher order batters the opportunity to play their natural game rather than have to chase a total that would force them to play more aggressively. This strategy appeared to be working exceptionally well until two exquisite stumpings by Aryan removed both of Fives County players, triggering a flurry of wickets. Feroze bowled a very tight and parsimonious spell thereafter until Fives, needing 24 off the last 3 overs, subsided to a 14 run loss. Special mention must also go to Nick Arnold who returned to the field after injuring his (throwing) wrist to field. A 12th man should be brought to all future games to provide cover in such an eventuality.

Lessons: Fives are, and proved to be, a very capable side and Wanstead did not impose themselves in the fashion that they should have done. We will not get out of jail so easily in future rounds. However, once belief that victory was possible spread, the team became twice as effective in the field as they had been in the first 10 overs. The lesson that needs to be learnt is that we now need to bring that level of self-belief of onto the field from the first ball and now that we have shown what a difference it can make - and how resilient the team's fielding can be - this U15 team should become much harder to beat.
