Match report Woodford Wells 2nd XI vs Wanstead 2nd XI 8 June

Wanstead won by 3 wickets

Wanstead 2s returned to winning ways against Woodford Wells on Saturday at Overton Drive, after a poor showing against Chelmsford in their last outing.

Wells made the early running thanks to some hard hitting from opener James Tuplin. Tuplin was eventually dismissed after some fine bowling from Jack Lord but the Wells were in a strong position at the drinks interval having acquired 124 for the loss of just 3 wickets.

Rob Leiper (85) and Wanstead old boy Tom Corbyn (35) built a strong partnership until Saurav Prabhaker made the breakthrough Wanstead desperately required in the 42nd over with the score on 190. Saurav and Wanstead's other spinner, Nugget (3-36), bowled well at the death and Wanstead fought back well to restrict the Wells to 231. Saurav was the pick of the bowlers with 4-57.

Wanstead's chase got off to a diligent start with Ryan Hamill ensuring any bad balls were punished. However, Ryan and JP Jnr were out in quick succession bring the experienced Matthew Smith and Nikunj Velani to the crease. The pair looked good until some Matt Smith calamity meant that Nikunj Velani was run out. Nugget lasted just two balls for his 0 leaving Wanstead in a bit of trouble at 70-4. Matt Smith soon followed after scoring 36 bringing hard-hitting Mahesh Velani to the crease.

Mahesh decided to play in his usual manner and hit his second ball over the trees into the golf course. With 20 overs remaining Wanstead were 100-5 still requiring 132 more for victory. Mahesh bludgeoned a quick-fire 33 and was well supported by Stephen Ramdial. Thanks to some more hard-hitting from Azhar Janjua and elegant stroke-play from Stephen Ramdial Wanstead won with 5 overs to spare.

It was Stephen Ramdial (61*) who had held the Wanstead reply together and he was awarded the Man of the Match award. Stephen said, "I thought the old fruities did well to restrict them to just 231. I was a little worried when we were losing wickets but knew if we could just put a few partnerships together we'd score runs quickly".
